The Mirror Trap

The door swings open with such force, it bangs against the staircase loudly. Light fills the doorway, bright and painful after spending hours, maybe even days locked in the dark. Jessica squints, trying to adjust her vision to the sudden change. She crawls out of the space and looks toward the window.

Night had already fallen by now. When she slowly gets to her feet, Jessica also notices a small plastic Christmas tree on the stand next to the couch. It’s surprising to her Wanda would even think to put one up.

Wanda grabs Jessica’s arm and yanks her onto her feet, clearly annoyed that she is taking so long.

“Get your ass moving. I’m not going to drag you to your room,” Wanda says.

Jessica complies but moves slowly, her legs being numb from being cramped up in that dark hole.

Claw is jumping furiously as usual on his perch, snapping his beak, and blurting out, “Go to your room!” over and over.

When Jessica gets there, she steps inside, and Wanda slams the door behind her. The room is plunged into darkness except for the small amount of light coming from the window produced by the streetlamp outside.

Even though Jessica knows Wanda is doing it out of anger, she likes the calmness of the shadows in her room. The space is larger than the closet so she can stretch and feel much more comfortable. The bite marks on her arms throb and her face is red hot from the lashing she gave it, but she ignores the pain and instead concentrates on the one place she wants to go. To escape where she lives.

She’s done with Wanda and Carl. Through with all of them.

This time, when she returns to the upside-down place, she feels she’ll find the children again because she’s entering through the mirror in her room.

Jessica kneels in front of it and sees her reflection in the dim light. Her hair is messy, and her face is a mask of shadows and red marks that suit her mood. She touches the glass in front of her and feels the cold, smooth texture. It invigorates her and she concentrates on the edge near the frame.

There she sees it, the stretching lines, where the real world and the upside-down world meet. Her mind goes there and a gentle tug on her body commences. A second later, she’s in the mirror.

Jessica stands and looks wanly into the darkened corridor of gray and black waves of energy, flowing out into the distance.

They call to her and coax her into a feeling of relaxation and calm. Noise comes from the void. It’s a low hum at first, then the sounds become words. The children are speaking to her, calling her to join them. Jessica smiles and walks into the abyss beyond. Soon, she sees the house in the field, sitting in its usual spot and upside-down position.

The stones are glowing, a visible and surprising change from their usual dormant state. The light reflects off the mirrors of the house and she sees images in each one.
